The Hidden Fleet River

Xin Ren is a photographer from China currently studying at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her projects focus more on ancient architecture, environment, social culture, and urban development. As an international student, she wants to explore the social issues and environmental changes in London from the perspective of a bystander and a participant.

London has a vast natural water system hidden beneath the ground. The history of London's hidden rivers can be traced back to the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century AD. These rivers were used to transport goods, boats, and passengers. Before the invention of modern water treatment systems, many rivers also provided a source of drinking water for the city. In addition to this, they also served as the city's drainage system, carrying away sewage and rainwater. They also had industrial uses, providing an important power source for waterwheels. As London grew and developed, many natural rivers and streams were hidden or covered to create underground sewage pipes. Using River Fleet as a research subject, this project aims to explore the impact of human activity and urban planning on the natural environment and the challenges of sustainable urban development by photographing the remaining traces.
