Black Ink

Michael Yee-Chong is an artist, photographer and activist born and bred in London studying MA Photography & Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths University.

His photographic practice is based around portraiture and the body politics of the individual and the experience of living within the urban condition. Working with the complex relationship between photographer and subject exploring parameters between the observer and the observed, his work deals with issues of identity, freedom, self-expression and race. His research-led practice reflects upon the diversity that exists within the exciting and eclectic mix of ethnicity, class, religion and sexuality that is contemporary London.

Observation and representation of our cultural diversity helps us understand different perspectives within the world in which we live, in addition helps us recognise and respect ways of being that are not necessarily our own.

How we see each other has a profound effect on how we relate to each other _Gramsci_
