Souhail Zaatari

The Space along the Way

Souhail Zaatari (b.1983) is a Palestinian / Iranian artist based in London since 2003.

Gaining his bachelor’s degree in photography from the London College of Communication, he is currently pursuing a masters at Goldsmiths University.

His visual practice combines observational explorations, joining the aesthetics and poetics of space with his relationship to place. Elements of fine art, street, landscape, and portraiture photography can be found throughout his work.

In - The space along the way - his project explores the area of London in which he inhabits. Beckoning the viewer into a territory where the city is transformed into an array of scenes and locations shrouded in mundanity. Here, the ordinary and banal, often overlooked and on the peripheral margins of the everyday emerge as celebrated sites. These abstractions convey subtle and ambiguous features of the surrounding area, and so to the identities, and communities within them. Souhail navigates these boundaries and junctures where industry and commerce link with contemporary city life.  Commenting on themes such as, urban identity and otherness, consumerism and material culture, objecthood and abandonment. The images in this body of work play with those relationships, utilising aesthetics of light and colour, juxtaposed against the backdrop of the city's architecture and altered landscape, as a conjure to invoking the complexities of the modern urban reality.
