Chen Rao is a China-born photographer currently based in London, where she is pursuing an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths. Her work primarily involves the use of photography and videography to delve into the complexities of individual identities and personal narratives within modern urban spaces. She focuses on themes such as identification, a sense of belonging, and the fluidity of spaces. Apart from personal photography projects, with an interest in documenting personal stories, Chen has been involved in the production of several documentary films.

Sojourner's Journey (2022-ongoing)

 

In this project, I explored the experiences of Chinese international students in London by taking a walk with them, trying to understand how they define their identity, their sense of belonging, and their conception of 'home' in this global city. Every personal narrative subtly weaves into the wider city narrative during these walks, contributing to diverse storylines. Through every environmental portrait, I aimed to capture the essence of their unique experiences and how they relate to this sprawling metropolis.
