Rohan Patel

Victoria Centre Market

Rohan Patel is interested in the intersection between social research and photography . His work uses the practice of image making as an accessible tool to communicate with communities. Growing up in Nottingham he has been fascinated by localism, micro-communities and subcultures. This led to Rohan studying a BA in Politics and Sociology and completing a dissertation using photography-based methodologies. Further as part of studies, Rohan spent a year working in industry for the Nottingham Centre for Photography and Social Engagement as a coordinator. After his studies Rohan became a project manager at a food justice charity, running a food bank and low-cost supermarket to help those in poverty. Currently Rohan works for the Monitoring Group as an advocate helping victims of racism through their campaigns and journey to justice.

This series is part of a larger body of work which documents  a small traditional market located in Nottingham. The project began four years ago due to a fascination with the space. The work  seeks to preserve local history and document culture in changing city landscapes. The work exemplifies the complex interplay between public and private sectors in urban redevelopment, revealing the often-overlooked consequences of displacement and communal loss. The exhibited pictures focus on the sense of loss that market traders feel as the market is on the verge of closure.
